New policies needed to meet climate goals
30th Jun 2017
The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) today published their 2017 report Meeting Carbon Budgets: Closing the Policy Gap which raises concerns regarding the likelihood of targets set out Climate Change Act 2008 being met, citing the importance of new policies in the fight against climate change.
The Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) supports the inclusion of measures that it has long championed as recommendations in order to meet emissions reductions targets, such the use of biomethane gas and hydrogen. The report recommends injecting around 20 TWh of biomethane into the gas grid by 2030.
Mike Foster, Chief Executive of EUA said,
“the future of heat lies in green gases such as biomethane, BioSNG and hydrogen. All of these offer the potential to decarbonise , affordably and without the need for homeowners to change their heating systems. The existing gas grid is a major asset which we need to utilise to meet emissions targets.”
The report also suggests using low-carbon hydrogen to meet heat demand. Hydrogen has potential applications across all future energy systems and benefits from not only the fact that it has a relatively high energy weight ratio but that it is also emission free at point of use. An abundant and versatile resource, this could serve as a means to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
Reasserting the importance of investing in such technologies and encouraging their usage, without new and strengthened policies, emissions will not continue to fall and the fourth and fifth carbon budgets will be missed. Low carbon solutions can begin at home and the infrastructure in place can be utilised to work towards meeting targets.
