Made in Britain

Last week I met with the accreditation body “Made in Britain”. They ran through their accreditation process needed to use the registered trademark.
I know some of you reading this already work for companies that use the trademark. In short, they look to “transformative change” from inputs into an output that can accurately be described as “Made in Britain”.
It also struck me that this will pose a challenge to some businesses that describe their products as manufactured in the UK, so I will tread carefully. The reason why it matters is that according to Made in Britain, consumers at home will tend to look for the label of origin. It won’t be the only factor considered, price is an obvious consideration but all other things being equal, there is a demand pull for British made products.
Given this, there will be a temptation to badge British when in fact the transformative change may not have taken place in Britain (Northern Ireland has its own label). This matters even more, when politicians start to get involved. They want to wave the flag for British success, understandably so, but they then get tempted to exaggerate the truth.
British manufacturing faces many challenges, ironically home-grown electricity costs is one of them, but a thriving sector is good for the UK overall. It brings jobs, investment and tax revenues to the Treasury, whereas imported competing products bring the opposite.
Our heating industry is based on British-produced appliances – around 80 per cent of boilers installed are made in Britain. It will be interesting to see if this proportion of heat pumps can be made in the UK, especially as global supply chains make it more attractive to make overseas and sell into the UK. It will also be important and a test for our industry, whether transformative change takes place in the UK for all those heat pumps that politicians claim are going to be made in Britain.
