EUA welcomes commitment to new homes but warns that design must include low temperature heating

The Energy and Utilities Alliance, EUA are today calling on the Chancellor to be bold as he sets out his fiscal plans for the next five years. It has been widely reported that he will pledge almost £7bn to make housebuilding a priority, with more than 400,000 "affordable homes" to be built across England.

Mike Foster, Chief Executive of EUA said “Additional homes would be very welcome, indeed it is one of our ‘asks’ within the EUA manifesto. However I would want a commitment made to building new homes that have the highest levels of efficiency, so as to that avoid costly future retrofits. We want any homes built to enable renewable technology to be installed whether that installation is immediate or in the future. If as a nation we are serious about tackling fuel poverty and cutting our carbon emissions then new homes need to be able to support a low temperature heating system.”

In addition to new homes being built EUA would also like the Chancellor to commit to:

  • A single, simple long term energy policy that has cross party support.
  • Additional gas storage
  • Shale exploitation
  • Low carbon gas including biogas and hydrogen
  • Carbon capture and storage.
  • Natural gas commercial vehicles to tackle greenhouse gas emissions and air quality in UK cities.
