Bio-methane – cleaner, greener and cheaper?

30th Jun 2015

Yesterday, (29th June) the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council, HHIC hosted a seminar on Bio-methane, looking at the contribution bio-methane was already making to the UK’s energy mix.

Starting from the premise of the so-called energy trilemma; affordability, security and sustainability, bio-methane was challenged to help deliver decarbonisation of heating and the power grid by 2050.

Stewart Clements, Director of HHIC said “There will be increasing pressure to meet international climate change targets which will no doubt grow as we near the Paris Summit later this year and we in the heating industry need to respond by examining how the UK could shift from over 80% gas heating to a more mixed bag – notably heat pumps and hybrids – combining renewables with fossil fuels.

The development of “green gas” and other policies to decarbonise gas networks will take on an even greater importance and with it, the issue of gas quality and the impact upon appliances and the end user.

Our bio-methane seminar examined the technical issues surrounding gas quality, and was made possible by the excellent presenting team, of Severn Trent Water and SGN.”
