‘An irresponsible move’ HWA responds to George Osbourne’s announcement to scrap the zero carbon target
13th Jul 2015
“Only weeks ago we were told that the ‘new’ Government would champion renewables, which therefore indicated a commitment to energy efficiency. A short time later and we have an announcement from Chancellor George Osbourne that he is dropping the zero carbon homes target. Confused? I am” says Isaac Occhipinti, External Affairs Manager, HWA.
He continued;
“Energy Secretary, Amber Rudd announced in May that she would unleash a solar revolution; this was a sensible and encouraging move for the industry. We know that we need to start improving the energy efficiency of our housing stock. The Government know that they should be putting long term plans into place to improve our homes, so why aren’t they?
If the UK is to increase its use of renewable technologies then storage of some sort will be necessary and currently hot water storage is the only practical solution to turning the energy produced into something useful and banking it for when it needs to be used.
The Government must address the need to future proof new buildings by making them ‘hot water ready’. Removing the zero carbon target is irresponsible.
Including renewable technology or at least the provision for future installations in new build properties, would have provided the jump start Ms Rudd needed.
Now we face a continual and costly cycle of retrofitting homes. The UK needs more housing but there is no justification for building homes with a permanent legacy of high energy bills.
